چکیده

Traditional laboratory-based usability evaluations have many costs associated with them: financial costs, temporary loss in participant productivity, travel issues. For this reason, many human–computer interaction practitioners cannot conduct as many test iterations as they would like or may fail to secure representative samples, especially as user groups become more global. In recent years, we have begun to use less expensive remote evaluation techniques to complement traditional methods. This article describes some collaborative software that allows remote evaluations, along with the necessary hardware, to reproduce, as closely as possible, traditional evaluation techniques. It also describes the types of activities that lend themselves to this sort of approach and provides tips for conducting these sorts of sessions. Finally, this article provides data thatsuggest remotetechniquesarenotonlyeffectiveat improvinginterfacedesigns, but also produce results comparable to traditional approaches for typical measures.

Methods for Identifying Usability Problems with Web Sites

The dynamic nature of the Web poses problems for usability evaluations. Development times are rapid and changes to Web sites occur frequently, often without a chance to reevaluate the usability of the entire site. New advances in Web developments change user expectations. In order to incorporate usability evaluations into such an environment, we must produce methods that are compatible with the...

Learning about Users When You Can’t Go There: Remote Attended Usability Studies

This paper describes a method for conducting usability test sessions remotely, when the user researcher is in a different location from the participants, and observers from the product team can watch from different geographic locations. This remote attended usability methodology (also called the remote synchronous method) is distinguished from automated user data collection, which is more suita...

Remote Usability Evaluation at a Glance

Much traditional user interface evaluation is conducted in usability laboratories, where a small number of selected users is directly observed by trained evaluators. However, as the network itself and the remote work setting have become intrinsic parts of usage patterns, evaluators often have limited access to representative users for usability evaluation in the laboratory and the users’ work c...
